Abstract

1429959 Drills; wrenches UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO AB 26 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 50031/73 Headings B3C and B3N A combination tool for drilling a bore in a workpiece and for introducing into said bore a fastener, e.g. a self-tapping screw, comprises a cylindrical core 3 having a shaft 4 at one end for gripping by a drilling machine 6 and a mounting 7 at the other end for gripping a drill bit 8, and a sleeve 10 which surrounds said core 3 and carries a tightening member 14 for co-operation with said fastener, said sleeve being axially displaceable along the core 3 from a first end position in which the drill protrudes beyond said tightening member 14 and said sleeve is freely rotatable relative to the core, into a second end position in which said drill is completely retracted inside of the tightening member and said sleeve is both axially and rotatably fixed relative to said core. An annular locking member 18 is spring biased to cam locking balls 17 into depressions in the core 3 in said second end position, and when retracted to said first end position the balls 17 frictionally hold the sleeve on the core. The cylindrical core 3 may be hollow (Fig. 6, not shown) and contain a torque slip clutch to limit the tightening torque on the fasteners. The shaft 4 and drill mounting 7 are integrally formed and are journalled in end walls (27), (28) of the hollow cylindrical core. A flange (29) carries spring load balls (31) which slip out of depressions (32) in the end wall (27) at a predetermined torque, which can be adjusted by screwing in or out the end wall (28).
