Abstract
1447716 Removing volatiles from extruded thermoplastics DU PONT OF CANADA Ltd 4 July 1974 [13 July 1973] 29762/74 Heading B1B [Also in Division B5] Volatile material from heat softened thermoplastics being extruded by a helical screw 23, is vented through a cylindrical tube 15 within which a screw flight rotates, both relative to the tube and to a shaft on which it is mounted, to return to the extruder any thermoplastics deposited in the tube or on the shaft. The outlet 18 of tube 15 may be connected to atmosphere either directly or via pressure control means, or to means for recovering the volatile material, and either or both the tube 15 and outlet 18 may have a heating or cooling jacket. The flight within the tube 15 may terminate at or beyond the inlet to tube 15, and the shaft of the flight may be stationary, or may also rotate either in a different direction to, or in the same direction as the flight but at a slower speed. The thermoplastics may be delivered to the location of the screw 23 at which venting occurs by further screws, or by a further part of the screw 23 or, as described, by gravity to the inlet of the screw 23, at a hopper 22 through the wall 21 of which the tube 15 extends into volatile matter accummulating at 26. The volatile material may comprise water in polyamide, or monomer, low molecular weight polymer, or solvent in thermoplastics obtained by polymerising unsaturated monomers in a solvent. The thermoplastics preferably comprises homopolymers of ethylene and copolymers of ethylene and higher olefins, containing up to 2.5% of volatile cyclohexane solvent, which is extruded through an underwater cutter to form pellets. The removal of the volatiles permits higher output, a more constant extrusion pressure to be obtained and a lower screw compression ratio to be employed e.g. 1:1, or preferably 2:1 to 2.4:1. The examples relate to the extrusion of homopolymers of ethylene, and co-polymers of ethylene and butene-1, polymerised in cyclohexane.
