Abstract

1390933 Blind riveting AVDEL Ltd 8 March 1972 [8 March 1971] 6285/71 Heading B3U A fastener having a tubular body and a head is set in sheet material by a tool comprising a head engaging means 30, Fig. 2, having a tapered portion 40 and an abutment surface 62, Fig. 5, adjacent to and peripherally of the portion 40 which surface is shaped as the internal surface of a hollow truncated cone and extends at right angles to the external surface of the portion 40, and body engaging means 32 mounted for movement relative to the head engaging means to cause radial expansion of the body by the entry of portion 40 in the body followed by the axial collapse of the fastener. In operation a threaded drawbolt 54 is rotated either by hand or by a pneumatic motor to engage a threaded portion of the fastener and drive the portion 40 into the head of the fastener body. The body is thus expanded into an interference fit with the sheet material after which surface 62 abuts the fastener head. On further rotation of the drawbolt, the fastener is axially collapsed to set the fastener.
