Abstract
1352310 Valves COLES CRANES Ltd 26 May 1971 [28 May 1970] 25690/70 Heading F2V A braking valve for preventing runaway under load of a ram 30 is connected at 12 to the head end of the ram and at 26 to a directional control valve, and includes a spool 4 which responds to pressure in chamber 8 connected at 7 to the line serving the rod end of the ram. When the rod end of the ram is pressurized to move the ram in the load direction, the pressure in chamber 8 shifts the spool 4 against springs 5 to uncover ports 6 of providing successively increasing flow areas. The rate of movement of the spool is controlled by an orifice in the supply to chamber 8 or by the rate at which fluid can escape from chamber 9 through orifice 10. When the head end of the ram is to be pressurized, fluid at 26 initially flows to 12 via orifice 10 and check valve 16 and the pressure drop shifts the spool to uncover ports 6. The ports controlled by the spool could alternatively be in the spool. The spool could be moved by a separate pressure responsive piston, and a pilot operated lock valve may be provided at 31. A check valve may also be provided between chamber 8 and connection 26 to allow flow from the latter to chamber 8 to reduce the pressure differential required to open the valve for flow from 26 to 12.
