Abstract

1,176,696. Ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers. STAMICARBON N.V. 16 Oct., 1967 [18 Oct., 1966], No. 47080/67. Heading C3P. Ethylene/acrylic acid copolymers having a melt index greater than 5, a modulus of elasticity at least 1500, preferably more than 2000 kg./ cm.<SP>2</SP> and an elongation at tensile break of above 350%, may be prepared by a process wherein ethylene, acrylic acid and a free-radical initiator are continuously fed at pressures above 800 atmospheres into an autoclave in which they are mixed with reaction mixture already present, and heated to the polymerization temperature, polymerization being effected at pressure p between 1500 and 10,000 atmospheres and at temperature T between 150‹ and 290‹ C. so that the mole per cent of acrylic acid incorporated in the copolymer is 0À1 to 10 and wherein p, T and M satisfy the relation 0À05 p-T-11M+ 166#O. The initiator may be oxygen, lauroyl peroxide, di-t.-butyl peroxide, capryloyl peroxide, t.-butyl perbenzoate or an azo compound. The acrylic acid may be diluted with iso-octane and propane may be used as chain transfer agent.
