Abstract

[Also in Divisions G2 and H1] A method of effecting a chemical or physical change or stimulating a chemical or physical process comprises exposing photosensitive target 2, for example a laser resonator, to infra red and/or visible and/or ultra violet light generated by the ignition of an ignitable atmosphere surrounding the target in bomb 1. The ignitable atmosphere is preferably an ignitable or spontaneously igniting mixture of a finely divided solid, for example metal particles or particles of carbonaceous material dispersed in a reactant gas but may be a gas and/or vapour mixture (Examples are given). The ignitable mixture may be fed through mixer -feeder device (5) to peripheral supply manifold 4 and thence to injection inlets 4<SP>1</SP> controlled by needle valves 7, and if necessary may be ignited by means 8, for example a pair of spark or arc electrodes or electrical conduits bridged by a resistance heater element. The components of spontaneously igniting mixtures are fed individually. There is reference to an apparatus wherein a plurality of radially arranged laser resonators is sealed wholly within the bomb with their laser pulse output ends converging into an internally mounted chamber.
