Abstract

1,155,976. Testing glassware photo-electrically. A.T. RANSON (Owens-Illinois Inc.) June 30, 1966, No.29328/66. Heading G1A. Glassware testing apparatus comprises means for rotating a hollow article of glassware about its axis, three radiant energy sources and four radiant energy detectors arranged to detect horizontal and vertical checks (i.e. mirror-like cracks) near the rim of the article and means for rejecting the article if a check is detected. Glass articles are conveyed to and from an inspection station by the apparatus of Specification 989, 961. Horizontal checks Light from a lamp 61 is focussed on to the neck of a container C at 50 degrees to the horizontal and light reflected by horizontal checks falls on to one or other of detectors 62, 63 whose field of view is also at 50 degrees to the horizontal. The detecotrs comprise a tubular housing with a photo-sensitive cell at one end and a pair of lenses at the other. In between are diaphragms which stop stray light and limit the field of view to a rectangle parallel to the article axis. Matching the image of the lamp filament, and a polarizer and filter having the same transmission characteristics as the material of container C. Vertical checks are detected by lamps 64, 65 which direct light upwards at the neck of container C at an angle of 15 degrees to the horizontal, light reflected by the checks being detected by detectors 66, 67 respectively of the same construction as detectors 62, 63. The filament images of lamps 64, 65 lie perpendicular to the article axis.
