Abstract
A process for preparing salts of a -hydroxy-g -1-4C-alkylmercapto butyric acids comprises decomposing the corresponding nitrile with aqueous H3PO4, and precipitating this latter from the solution by the addition of an oxide or hydroxide of a metal which is capable of forming a water-soluble salt with the resultant butyric acid. H3PO4 of 70-85% strength may be used. In one embodiment the NH4+ salt of the butyric acid is isolated in a pure state by removing the PO33- ions with Ca++. Alternatively, excess Ca++ is added as the hydroxide, and the mixture boiled to expel NH3. The resulting mixture of the Ca++ salt of the butyric acid and the Ca++ phosphates is evaporated to dryness and used as an additive to chicken &c. feedstuffs. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 722,024.
