Abstract

Deposition of phosphate coatings on metal surfaces using a phosphating soln. based on Zn and/or Fe phosphate is accelerated by including 0.1-6 g/l of one or more sulphonamide cpds. (I) of formula R1-NH-SO2-R2 (Ia) and/or (Ib) in the soln.: R1 = H, 1-4C alkyl, a 5- or 6-membered satd. carbo- or heterocyclic ring or an at least 6-membered aryl or aralkyl gp.; R2 = OH, OM or an at least 6-membered aromatic ring opt. substd. by OH, NH2 or NHCOR4; R3 = H, OH or NH2; R4 = 1-3C alkyl or 2-4C carboxylalkyl; M = alkali metal or NH4.
