Abstract
A process for preparing N- (3-halopropionamido methyl) acrylamides. The novel compounds of the present invention can be prepared by the reaction of a 3-halopropionamide, acrylamide and formaldehyde. The N- (3-halopropionamidomethyl) acrylamides of the present invention require for their formation the combination of one mole of 3-halopropionamide with one mole of acrylamide per mole of formaldehyde. In order to meet this requirement, one mole of 3-halopropionamide and one mole of acrylamide can be reacted with one mole of formaldehyde. It is also possible to carry out the reaction in phases. That is, one mole of acrylamide can be reacted with one mole of formaldehyde in the presence of an alkali, yielding N-methyl-olacrylamide, which, in turn, is converted to an N- (3-halopropionamidomethyl) acrylamide by reaction with an 3-halopropionamide mole, preferably in the presence of an acid catalyst.
