Why 3.0?

I was still wondering why 3.0 should be there when there is absolutely no major features or changes. This discussion and clarification from Linus has cleared all my doubts..

As projects get more mature it's hard to point to one feature and say "this is my major version bump." In fact, if you try to do a major version release and drive it with lofty goals of major refactoring, you're more likely to end up with a release which is years late. See Perl 6 and Python 3 for examples of this.

Or you get a project that isn't really finished, either in terms of residual bugs, omitted features, or both. See KDE 4 and GNOME 3 for examples.
