Prior to the start of this year's Australian Open, Hsieh Su-Wei announced that it would be her final singles major.

Hsieh, an accomplished singles player, lost in the opening round of singles qualifying before going on a tear through the women's and mixed doubles draws.

At the beginning of the year, Hsieh renewed her partnership with Elise Mertens. Hsieh and Mertens had previously teamed up to win the 2021 Wimbledon title. After initially struggling in the lead-up to the Australian Open, Hsieh and Mertens started to click once more.

Australian Open women's doubles: Hsieh and Mertens claim second major together

In the final, Hsieh and Mertens triumphed 6-1, 7-5 over the big-hitting duo of Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok. With the win, Hsieh improved her women's doubles slam total to seven. Mertens scored her fourth major title and will regain the world number-one doubles ranking.

After taking more than a year off of tour, former doubles world number one Hsieh has reestablished herself as one of the best doubles players in the world. Hsieh has now reached the semifinals or better at the last four majors, having also triumphed at the French Open and Wimbledon in 2023.

Men's doubles

By virtue of making the semifinals, Rohan Bopanna was assured of rising to world number one in men's doubles at the conclusion of the tournament. In doing so, Bopanna will become the oldest first-time number-one player in the sport's history. Bopanna, age 43, continued to rewrite the history books by becoming the oldest male player to win a major.

Partnering with Australia's Matthew Ebden, Bopanna grinded past Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6(0), 7-5 in the final. The win earned Ebden his third career major, having won the Australian Open mixed doubles title in 2013 and the Wimbledon men's doubles title in 2022.

Mixed Doubles: Hsieh Su-Wei and Jan Zielinski win maiden mixed major

Hsieh partnered with Poland's Jan Zielinksi to win her first mixed doubles major. Hsieh and Zielinski saved a match point in their defeat of Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski, ultimately triumphing 6-7(5), 6-4, [11-9]. Krawczyk was bidding to win the career grand slam in mixed doubles, and she and Skupski had won two Wimbledon titles as a pair.

Hsieh entered the match having won six women's doubles majors in her career but had never won one in mixed doubles. Zielinski, 11 years Hsieh's junior, had no majors in any discipline prior to the match.
