Stanley Lane-Poole

Lane Poole lahir di London, Inggris, anak sulung dari tiga bersaudara (dua putra dan satu putri) dari Edward Stanley Poole (1830-1867) dan istrinya, Roberta Elizabeth Louisa (1828-1866), putri Charles Reddelien, seorang naturalisasi Jerman. Nenek dari pihak ayah, Sophia Lane Poole, paman Reginald Stuart Poole dan paman buyutnya Edward William Lane, terkenal dengan karya mereka di bidang orientalisme dan arkeologi. Paman buyutnya yang lain adalah Richard James Lane, seorang litografer dan pengukir Victoria yang terkemuka. Saudaranya, Reginald Lane Poole, adalah seorang pengarsip dan sejarawan. Ayah dan ibunya meninggal saat dia masih kecil, sehingga Poole dan saudara-saudaranya dibesarkan oleh nenek mereka, Sophia Lane Poole, dan paman buyut mereka, Edward William Lane.^[2][3] Dari tahun 1874 hingga 1892 ia bekerja di British Museum, dan setelah itu di Mesir untuk meneliti arkeologi Mesir. Dari tahun 1897 hingga 1904, ia menjabat sebagai Profesor Studi Arab di Trinity College Dublin.

Ia menikah dengan Charlotte Bell Wilson dari tahun 1879 hingga kematiannya pada tahun 1905. Pasangan ini memiliki tiga putra dan seorang putri; putra sulungnya mendahuluinya sementara dua putranya yang lain, Richard adalah seorang perwira Angkatan Laut Kerajaan dan Charles adalah seorang rimbawan yang banyak bekerja di Australia.^[2][4]
