I went to eat at Restaurant Eisenhof yesterday night with a friend. I have never heard of the place before, although it is located opposite of one of the hip go-to places in Zurich (Maison Blunt). From the inside as well as the outside, Eisenhof does not look posh, fancy, perhaps not even cozy. There are no designer tables, no pretentiously funny decors and the tables on the outside are simple metal tables covered with a paper sheet. If you need all that, read no further and go somewhere else! If you come for a good dinner, you will be positively surprised. The menu is simple, very straightforward and nothing out-of-the-ordinary (a variety of down-to-earth Swiss dishes). As my friend knew exactly what to order, I followed suit and we both had the beef on a hot stone with French friends and sauces. A choice I would not regret! The beef tasted excellent and seemed of supreme quality, the French fries were well done (slightly crispy, not greasy, not burnt) and the sauces added a well-rounded flavor. There was no unnecessary decor on the plate, no beautifying of the food. Instead, what you see is what you get. Simply delicious! The place seems frequented by a broad mix of people - people from the neighborhood, the young crowd which wants to grab a bite before the night, some old folks, even a few yuppies - yet in the end, it does not matter. It is just about the hot stone with beef. Price vs. quality is very good. While there might be cheaper places to go to, a good piece of beef has its price. Other venues would charge you double for what you get here. The waitresses were attentive and very friendly. All in all, an uncomplicated evening with a couple beers and great food!
