From an email request:

I was wondering if it was time to reverse the logic for certificate
checks[1] and default to checking certificates now. Use of TLS is
commonplace now so it is likely current releases of mainstream operating
systems will have a usable CA bundle installed with wget & curl.

Probably not the kind of change to make in a patch release, but we should do it sooner rather than later.
