Following discussions with @dplsek and @ivan-calderon regarding the Editorial typography ramp, we have agreed to keep Salt typography ramp without making any exceptions.
We have two options to consider:
1. Using the TD ramp across all breakpoints (Desktop, Tablet, Mobile) -Darrin's Proposal:
Repurpose and rename TD to ED (Editorial Density) and eliminate all the editorial exceptions and bespoke styles we've been creating. The rationale is that LD doesn't work out-of-the-box (OOTB) for editorial, and TD doesn't work OOTB for mobile solutions without requiring numerous exceptions, especially concerning the type ramp.
Changes:
Rename TD to ED and add increased line spacing options for body styles (all densities).
Create a mobile 'density':
Size base = 44px
Padding base = 16px
Text base = 18px
Pros: No need to remap spacing and typography between different breakpoints.
Cons: Uncertainty about how TD appears in the desktop view, as components and spacing in TD seem large on desktops.
2. Using the LD Ramp (As-Is) for Desktop and TD for Tablet and Mobile:
Current Editorial ramp has exceptions on typography (body, H4). Remove these exceptions and apply the Salt LD typography ramp as-is across the entire site.
Pros: Utilizes the Salt typography ramp without exceptions, ensuring easy maintenance and consistency.
Cons: Body font size will be 14px instead of 16px, which has received feedback for being too small.
Action Item:
Create mockups for both approaches and determine which direction is more feasible.
Future Discussion:
Additional Line Height Options: We currently use 1.3REM across Salt, which is smaller than the recommended line height for text-heavy content. Darrin suggested adding extended line height options across all densities.
