Hello Mozc team,
I’m a long-time user of Linux and have recently been using Xubuntu 24.04 in a Japanese environment.
I’ve noticed that, by default, when the user switches to Mozc (via IBus), the input mode is still set to “direct input” instead of “Hiragana.” This results in an additional manual step for Japanese users who expect to be able to type in Japanese immediately after enabling the IME.
For example, on Windows and macOS, enabling the IME allows users to start typing in Japanese right away, while on Ubuntu-based systems with Mozc, we need to manually change the mode to "Hiragana" after enabling the IME.
I believe setting
active_on_launch: True
by default would make the initial experience more intuitive for Japanese users. In my case, manually setting
active_on_launch: True
made the environment much more comfortable. However, it took me quite a while to figure this out, and I suspect many new Ubuntu users — especially those not deeply familiar with Mozc’s internal settings — might be experiencing the same confusion without realizing that a solution exists.
Ideally, this setting could be automatically applied when the system language is set to Japanese (LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8).
That said, I suspect this is less of a Mozc issue and more a matter of how Ubuntu (and its flavors like Xubuntu) manage default IME settings for Japanese environments.
If you happen to know where such configuration decisions are typically made — whether in downstream packages like
ibus-mozc
, or in Ubuntu’s language setup — I’d really appreciate any pointers. Specifically, I’d like to know where or to whom I should direct this kind of feedback within the Ubuntu ecosystem.I’ve also summarized the behavior in a comparison table and screenshots in a Japanese forum post here:

Thank you for your great work on Mozc!
