I tried peek and silentcast (both mentioned here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/107726/how-to-create-animated-gif-images-of-a-screencast)

Finally I chose this silentcast, though it's less intuitive to use but!! Given the same settings. Silentcast's recorded image size is much smaller. it's really nice to have it, thank you.

Thank you for letting me know and for the link too. I didn't realize there were so many options for this now. I'm working on a more intuitive version based on Gtk3 and written in C. Spent a couple weeks on it back in December and just got back working on it now. If I don't take another 2 month break, it will be done before the end of this month for sure. Pretty soon, I'll put an unfinished version that's usable in branch next for people to test.
