Using freetds 1.3.17+ds-2 on Debian GNU/Linux connected to MS SQL Server 2016.
Some test cases:

$ fisql -S $DB_HOSTNAME -U $DB_USERNAME -P $DB_PASSWORD
Changed database context to 'tempdb'.
Changed language setting to us_english.
1>> SELECT CONNECTIONPROPERTY('net_transport') AS protocol;
2>> GO
protocol
--------
DB-LIBRARY error:
        Requested data conversion does not exist
Operating-system error:
        Success
--------

(1 rows affected)

$ fisql -S $DB_HOSTNAME -U $DB_USERNAME -P $DB_PASSWORD
Changed database context to 'tempdb'.
Changed language setting to us_english.
1>> SELECT CAST( 'hello' AS sql_variant ) AS test2;
2>> GO
test2
-----
DB-LIBRARY error:
        Requested data conversion does not exist
Operating-system error:
        Success
-----
