The NHL Draft is fast approaching, promising a huge influx of new talent. Here’s everything you need to know to tune in and watch.

The 61st NHL Entry Draft will be held in Nashville on June 28-29, 2023. The Chicago Blackhawks have the first pick. Eligible players must have been born between 2003-2005 or be non-North American players born in 2002 who were not drafted. Those drafted in 2021 and born after June 30, 2003, may also be chosen.

The NHL changed the draft lottery system in 2014-15 to decrease the odds of low-ranked teams winning but increase chances for non-playoff teams. There are two separate lotteries for the top two picks, limiting how many spots teams can move up and how many times they can win within five years.

The draft lottery held on May 8, 2023, resulted in the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks winning the top two picks overall. Chicago moved up two spots to claim the first pick, while Anaheim and Columbus each moved down one place.

Who could be the top pick in the 2023 NHL Draft?

Connor Bedard is a young hockey player creating buzz. He’s expected to be the first pick for the Chicago Blackhawks. He’s had much success in the WHL and made history by winning multiple awards in the same season. He’s also won gold medals with Canada’s under-18 and junior teams.

The Anaheim Ducks are set to pick Adam Fantilli at No. 2 in the draft. Fantili played for Michigan. He won the Hobey Baker Award as a freshman. The Canadian won Gold medals at the World Juniors and World Championships.

Leo Carlsson is likely going No. 3 to Columbus Blue Jackets for standout performances in Swedish Hockey League. In the 2021-22 season, Carlsson, who was only 17 years old, played in the SHL and made his professional debut. He scored three goals and earned 9 points in 35 regular season games.

The upcoming NHL Entry Draft has generated excitement due to the depth of talent in this year’s class. The draft will be televised on ESPN, adding to the event’s anticipation.
