Inherited from Vulgar Latin *verecunnia, from Latin verēcundia, possibly influenced by cunnus (vagina). Doublet of verecondia, which was borrowed. Compare Galician vergoña ~ vergonza, but Portuguese and Occitan vergonha, Sicilian virigogna ~ vrigogna, Spanish vergüenza.
