From Proto-Finnic *tauti, borrowed from Proto-Norse [script needed] (*dauđi) (cf. Proto-Germanic *dauþuz). Cognates include Estonian taud (a pestilence or infectious disease), Icelandic dauði (death) and Swedish död (death).
