Through syncope from dialectal pyves, alteration of pëves, from Old Albanian pëvetën, from Proto-Albanian *apu-wait-ja, from Proto-Indo-European *weyt-; compare Serbo-Croatian véćati (to deliberate, confer), Lithuanian vaiténti (to discuss), and possibly Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬉𐬚𐬀 f (vaēθa, judgment, verdict).[1] Alternatively, from Proto-Albanian *pūta, related to Latin putō (to reckon, to ponder) and Proto-Slavic *pȳtàti.[2]
