Etymology

edit

From Proto-Philippine *sulit (substitute, replacement), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *sulit (difficult, complicated). The close semantic agreement of the Casiguran Dumagat and Hanunóo terms suggests that one focal reference of this term was to replanting a crop that had failed, or had not been fully successful in some way.
