editEtymology
editFrom dialectal Dutch nuw, alternative form of nieuw derived from the inflected stem of Middle Dutch nie, nuwe, from Old Dutch niuwi, from Proto-Germanic *niwjaz. The predicative form nuut is from Middle Dutch nuwt, which may originally have been a neuter declension form, but whose generalization (in several dialects of Dutch) was at least reinforced by the inflectional parallelism oud, ouwe (“old”) vis-à-vis nuut, nuwe (“new”).
