Pronunciation

Etymology 1

edit

Probably from an old or proto-Romanian form aeți (with a similar form attested in Aromanian), from Latin habētis. The form with -v- (aveți) in the present form of the verb's main conjugation (as opposed to its use in this form as an auxiliary verb) may have been remade by analogy with avut;[1] ați may also be seen as a reduced, clitic form of aveți[2] See also am, which has a parallel development.

Verb

edit

(voi) ați (modal auxiliary, second-person plural form of avea, used with past participles to form perfect compus tenses)

  1. (you [all]) have...
    Sunt sigur l-ați întâlnit!
    I'm sure you've met him!

Etymology 2

edit

Presumably from a Vulgar Latin *eatis, from Latin habēbātis.

Verb

edit

(voi) ați (modal auxiliary, second-person plural form of avea, used with infinitives to form conditional tenses)

  1. (you [all]) would
    Ați dori ceva de băut?
Would you like something to drink?
