Before being superseded by the 1990 Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement, the form was mostly restricted to Portugal, as the majority pronunciation in Brazil was Egito. Even after the Orthographic Agreement, it's still common in Portugal due to the P being pronounced by a significant part of the population, as in egípcio.
