Etymology
editFrom 回 (kai, “return”) + 李 (ri, “plum”). The figurative use of 李 (ri) is from the following line in the Classic of Poetry:
- Original Chinese: 投我以桃、報之以李
- Japanese reading: 我に投ずるに桃を以ってすれば、これに報ゆるに李を以ってす (ware ni tōzuru ni momo o motte sureba, kore ni mukuyuru ni sumomo o motte su, “Translation by James Legge: When one throws to me a peach, I return to him a plum.”)
