Etymology 1

Inherited from Old East Slavic волосъ (volosŭ), from Proto-Slavic *volsъ. Doublet of влас (vlas), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic. From *h₂welh₁- (hair; wool).

Cognate with Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, twig, sprout), Persian گرس (gors, curled hair), Northern Kurdish pirç (hair) and Lithuanian valaĩ, as well as with Old Armenian վարս (vars), an Iranian borrowing.
