Denied entry in Japan?

edit

"he was refused entry into Japan due to his South African nationality (this being during the apartheid era)."

How come his brother Jody was allowed to participate?

According to the Atlas F1 Nostalgia forum "But, this was all after Ian's troubled foray into full-time F1 with the Rothman's March 761/771 - which ultimately saw him jailed in Japan after being refused entry into the country for the final race of the season on the grounds of being a South African! (Jody gained entry clearance after Walter Wolf, for whom he was driving at the time, squeezed the Canadian embassy who squeezed the Japanese..." Lec CRP1 17:53, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

"he turned in some poor performances"

What's the source for this? In report after report in Autosport he was praised for getting the best out of the 761B which had serious handling deficiencies. The 771 was no better, and his criticisms of the team grew louder. He easily outperformed his team mate. And another thing, as it's Christmas, March were not servicing five drivers. Only Scheckter and Ribeiro were works drivers, and each had contributed around £80K. The other Marches were run by RAM Racing for F&S Properties, Space Racing (i.e. BS Fabrications) for Brett Lunger, by Frank Williams for Patrick Neve, and by Arturo Merzario's own tiny team for himself.
