Arabic · Chinese · Esperanto · French · Italian · Japanese · SpanishPortuguese is spoken by an estimated 240,000,000 people, in the countries of Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Angola, São Tomé and Principe, Cape Verde, Macao, and East Timor. That makes it the 6th most spoken language in the world. It is a Romance language meaning that it is derived from Latin. Galician and Fala are the most related languages to it but Spanish is also well known to be similar.
Portuguese is also a Category I language, making it easy for English speakers to learn. More on the Portuguese language will be introduced in the Introductory Course.
As of now, there are two Portuguese courses available. Both are under construction and any help would be very useful.
- Introduction to Portuguese a collaborative work done to aid the curious. This is the absolute beginner's first baby steps into the Portuguese language. NOTE: This course is not needed to be able to move on to the Brazilian Portuguese Course.
- Brazilian Portuguese for those wanting to learn the Português do Brasil. Feel free to jump right in. Lessons are organized and packed with activities and quizzes to constantly keep your brain working.
Additionally you can find course books on our sister site wikibooks.org .There are three different books for learning portuguese. Again these are at various stages of completion:
- wikibooks:Portuguese/Contents/L1 and wikibooks:Portuguese/Contents/L2 - For learning european portuguese, a wikibook split across two different levels, and 15 lessons (quite well developed)
- wikibooks:Portuguese/Contents/BPL1 - For learning brazilian portuguese (very unfinished)
- wikibooks:Brazilian Portuguese - Also for learning brazilian portuguese (and also very unfinished)
There is also discussion about the duplication of courses
