I think we need to make clear that this template is just for existing and planned systems. As a counterpoint we could consider making a new template for former French tramways. Another point about this template is that I don't think that Laon should be considered a metro system for the following reasons.

  • It doesn't call itself a metro.
  • It doesn't run underground at all.
  • The capacity of its cars is quite low.
  • It doesn't really run to metro frequencies.

The first two individually don't necessarily mean that the system isn't a metro but I think that the combination of all four means that Laon doesn't pass the metro duck test. However, rather than take it out completely I would propose slightly expanding the scope of the template so that it covers self-contained French urban guided transport systems and we include a section on urban funiculars. Laon could be transferred to this section and we could also include the Montmartre funicular as well as the Lyon funiculars. I think that there are some other systems as well. Thoughts? How about renaming this template France rapid transport and then divide it between past, present, and futur networks using {{Navbox with collapsible groups}}? ChrisDHDR 13:08, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Did it with {{Navbox subgroup}}. ChrisDHDR 14:19, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That looks OK. I just have two slight concerns
  • The former tramways section could get quite large as there were quite a lot of them.
  • I'm not sure that "France rapid transit" is quite the right term. A lot of people only consider metros to be rapid transit with tramways and guided buses not meeting the criteria. Also as suggested above I was proposing to add urban funiculars (and put Laon in with them) which are generally not rapid at all. My suggestion would be something like "France Urban guided transit".

I'm not particularly comfortable with 'rapid transit' either. It's mostly an American term, and jargon at that. It's also usually synonymous with 'metro', so this template includes plenty of things which it doesn't cover; even the people who use it for tramways don't usually apply it to trolleybuses. We could use {{Navbox with collapsible groups}} if you don't want to clutter the template, however this is a collapsible template so size isn't a problem: the contents will be hidden anyway. About the name, I agree that "rapid transport" is not the best of names so how about "urban transport"? ChrisDHDR 19:25, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
