Lin Mei-hsiu (Chinese: 林美秀; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Lîm Bí-siù; born 6 June 1967) is a Taiwanese actress and television host. She strived with her perseverance and later produced signature works and become well-known in Taiwan. Lin has starred in various genres of works in her career, including stage shows, TV series, and movies, being acquainted with Taiwanese by her activity in the drama field. Due to her excellent acting skills, Lin has also received prestigious awards including the Golden Horse Award and the Golden Bell Award.

Early life

Lin Mei-Hsiu (born 6 June 1967) spent most of her childhoold in Luo Dong, I-Lan country, Taiwan. [2][3]When she was at elementary school, Lin joined the Pauline Lan Dancers Troupe as a dancer.[4] Later she graduate from National Kuo Kuang Academy of Arts [5] (now National Taiwan College of Performing Arts, TCPA).[6]

Career

In 1986, Lin Mei-Hsiu joined Pauline Lan as a dancer, and then she encountered Hugh K. S. Lee, who first discovered her talents in performance and invited her to join Ping-Fong Acting Troupe as Lee's apprentice.[4][7]In 1994, Lin acted in various stage shows in Ping-Fong Acting Troupe, including comedies, tragedy, pop, and science fictions.[6] [2]She also appreciated of her mentor, Lee, for discovering her acting potential.[8] Once Lin was the replacement for another actress and has been well-known for this role as a middle-aged women character since then.[9]With Lin's perseverance, she created one of her signature works, King To Nin Jiom advertisement in 2003 directed by Chen Yu-hsun. [10][11]Due to her impressive performance in the advertisement,[12] she not only participanted in Greenray Theatre Company and performed a series of dramas as a stage actor, but also continued acting in the TV shows and movies. Chen even customize a leading character for her, a simple, strong, and diligent Taiwanese mother and a street food owner, in the 2013 blockbuster Zone Pro Site (總鋪師).[13] [14] [15][16]

Lin experimented on a new type of performance in collaboration with three well-known Taiwanese figures in the industry - Tang Tsung Sheng, Sam Tseng, and Zheng Yinsheng in a 2022 participatory theatre,[17] entitled Heroes Are Who Can Act (會演是英雄) by UDNFunLife.[18] By incorporating various performantive forms including talkshows, dramas, and real-time polling, the audience were able to join, produce, and determine the storyline of the comedy with them.[19] [20][21]This new performance received positive feedback and was praised for its humorous and laid-back atmosphere.[22]

Works

From 1994 to 2004, she has worked with various theater troupes, including the Ping-Fong Acting Troupe[23] and the Spring Sun Performing Arts Troupe( as Spring River Performing Arts Troupe now).[24] Some of the plays she has performed in with the Green Ray Theatre Company[25] include A Dizzy Woman, I Do, I Do![26] in the year of 1997 and What's A Life!?[27] in the year 2000, as well as Forever Youth[28] in 2001. Also in GreenRay Theatre, Lin, Mei-Hsiu took part in Human Condition[29] series from the second episode to the seventh one. She has also appeared in a number of productions with the Ping-Fong Acting Troupe, which had been held by Lee Kuo-Hsiu, including Taiping Tianguo[30] in 1994 and The Half Mile of The Great Wall[31] in 1995. Other notable performance includes Money Without Life[32] in 2004 with the Spring Sun Performing Arts Troupe. In 2022, she appeared in the play Hero Action[33]

Lin has been active in Taiwanese television series including The Best of Times[34] on TTV as He Mu and in Swallow[35] on Da Ai TV as Fan Mu in 2001. She played the role of Xia Meixiu in True Love on Ba Da in the same year. Later she appeared in several dramas such as You're My Destiny on TTV and Sanlih TV, where she played the role of Chen Linsishi/Guifei. Through these TV dramas, her portrayal of mother-liked and middle-aged woman has been rooted in Taiwanese.[3]

Awards and Nominations

In 2003, Lin Mei-hsiu won a Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Black Dog is Coming.[36] [37]In 2014, she took home an award for Best Supporting Actress at the Taipei Film Festival for her role in Zone Pro Site.[38] She became the recipient for the Golden Globes Awards for Best Actress in a TV show/Miniseries in the showYour Eyes, My Hands[39] in 2011. The next year she won the Best Supporting Actress in a TV drama In Time with You.[40]
