The games in this subgenre of puzzle video games are often called Tetris-like, as that game was one of the first of its kind.

Objects fall from the top of the screen, which the player must maneuver into position. Fallen objects stack on top each other, ending the game when the playing field becomes too high. Objects are removed based on a ckearing criterion, allowing more space.
