Orthographic borrowing from Sumerian 𒈗 (lugal, king), with a phonetic complement 𒍑 (-uš).

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ems- (to give birth). Cognate with Vedic Sanskrit असुर (ásura, spirit, lord) and Avestan 𐬀𐬵𐬎𐬭𐬀 (ahura, lord).
