    From a Kam–Tai word for “bear” (Schuessler, 2007 apud Yan, 1983); compare Proto-Tai *ʰmwɯjᴬ (bear) (> Thai หมี (mǐi), Zhuang mui). The Records of the Grand Historian records that this was the family name () of the ruling family of the state of Chu (), while (OC *ɢʷlɯm, “bear”) was the clan name ().
