Etymology

[edit]

/sintau//sintɔː//sintoː/

Probably coined in Japan of components borrowed originally from Middle Chinese. Literally “the way of the gods”.

Attested at least since a portion of the Shoku Nihongi dated to 782.[1]

May also be encountered with the reading shindō with rendaku.[2] However, this reading is missing from some modern references,[1][3] or is indicated as an alternative reading.[4][5] The 1603 Nippo Jisho also only lists xintǒ without rendaku.[6]
