Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *laŋʔ) : semantic (illness) + phonetic (OC *laŋʔ, *laŋs).

Etymology

[edit]

Probably from Proto-Sino-Tibetan, though the exact etymon is unclear. Compare Tibetan གཡའ (g.ya', to itch), Jingpho kaya (to itch), Burmese ယား (ya:, to itch), Japhug rɤʑa (to itch) (Schuessler, 2007; Baxter and Sagart, 2017; Zhang, Jacques and Lai, 2019), which STEDT derives from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-ja (to itch). Also compare Lepcha ᰚᰭ (yak, to itch) (Schuessler, 2007), which STEDT derives from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-sak (to itch).
