Inherited from Old Marathi पोट (poṭa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (poṭṭa), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*poṭṭa), from Dravidian. Compare Hindi पेट (peṭ), Kannada ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ (hoṭṭe), Telugu పొట్ట (poṭṭa).
