[edit]A borrowing from Aramaic מְדִינְתָּא (məḏīntā) or Classical Syriac ܡܕ݂ܝܼܢ݇ܬܿܵܐ (məḏīttā). Cognate with Hebrew מדינה (məḏînâ, “state”), Ugaritic 𐎎𐎄𐎐𐎚 (mdnt). The root م د ن (m-d-n) is denominal.
