Inherited from Proto-Turkic *bālɨk (fish); cognate with Azerbaijani balıq, Bashkir балыҡ (balıq), Chuvash пулӑ (pulă), Kazakh балық (balyq), Kyrgyz балык (balık), Tatar балык (balıq), Turkmen bālyk, Uyghur بېلىق (bëliq) and Uzbek baliq.
