[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *míḱtis, from the root *meyḱ- ~ *meyǵ- (“to mix”) + *-tis.[1] Cognate with Lithuanian mìšti, Avestan 𐬨𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬌 (mišti). Compare μίγνυμι (mígnumi, “I mix”), from the same root.
