From Middle Dutch wrāke, wraeck, from Old Dutch wrāka, wrāca, from Proto-West Germanic *wrāku, from Proto-Germanic *wrēkō (persecution, revenge), from Proto-Indo-European *wreg- (to drive, press, urge).

Cognate with English wrack and wreak (vengeance, revenge), German Rache (revenge). More at wreak.
