[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wēweris, from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“squirrel; marten”). Cognate with Latvian vāvere, Old Prussian weware, Samogitian vuoverie, Polish wiewiórka and Latin vīverra (“ferret”).
