From Middle High German vertuon, from Old High German fartuon, firtuon (to fordo, waste, destroy), from Proto-West Germanic *fradōn, from Proto-Germanic *fardōną, *fradōną (to ruin, destroy). Equivalent to ver- +‎ tun. Cognate with English fordo, Dutch verdoen.
