[edit]From Middle High German verliesen, from Old High German firliosan, from Proto-West Germanic *fraleusan, from Proto-Germanic *fraleusaną, from Proto-Indo-European *leu- (“to detach”). Compare Ancient Greek λύω (lúō, “loose, untie”), Latin solvō (“dissolve”), English forlorn, Dutch verliezen.
