  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: va‧ló
  • Rhymes: -loː

Adjective

[edit]

való (not generally comparable, comparative valóbb, superlative legvalóbb) (periphrastic forms may occur instead of its uncommon comparative and superlative forms, using jobban [legjobban] or inkább [leginkább])

  1. meant, supposed, intended (to be somewhere or in some way)
Hova való ez a könyv?Where is this book supposed to go?
  2. fitting, suitable, appropriate (followed by -nak/-nek or -hoz/-hez/-höz)
    Synonym: illő
Ez a könyv neked való.This book is suitable for you. / You will like this book.
Péter hozzád való.Peter is suitable for you. (as a boyfriend/husband)
  3. (rare, chiefly in derived terms) real
    Synonyms: igazi, valódi
A való életben ez másképp van. This is different in real life.
  4. (in compounds) It may be added to the infinitive of a verb to form an adjective denoting “ought to be (done)” or “worthy of (doing)” or (writing as one word) to form the corresponding noun (“something that ought to be done or is worthy of doing”); see the examples below.

Derived terms

Compound words with this term at the beginning

Note: The compounds with való as their last element are only written as one word (without a space inside) if their part of speech is changed from the original adjective into something else (normally a noun) or if their meaning differs from the meaning of the sum of its components. In several cases, both ways of spelling are possible for different parts of speech, e.g. mosni való ruha (“[dirty] laundry”, literally: “clothes to be washed”) and mosnivaló (literally “to be washed”, actually the same meaning, but without a noun afterwards). Another example is ennivaló (“food”) from enni való (növény/állat etc.) (plant/animal etc. “suitable for eating” or “supposed to be eaten”), which has another sense of “adorable”, justifying the changed way of spelling (also ennivaló).[2]
