Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from , clipping of thạch hoa thái (石花菜) (Gelidium amansii), a species of red algae used to make agar. Rau câu (Gracilaria), a term designated another genus of red algae and agar source, came to be used in the Southern dialects, while Central dialects use đông sương.
