Etymology

From earlier *teisus, Proto-Balto-Slavic *teišus, and related to Old Prussian teisi (honor), Old Prussian teisingi (worth), Proto-Slavic *tixъ (calm, still).

By surface analysis, a nominal derivative of teĩsti (to judge, jury).[1]
