Borrowed from French sofa, ultimately from either Arabic صُفَّة (ṣuffa, long seat of stone or brick) or Classical Syriac ܨܦܬܐ. Compare Russian софа (sofa), Italian sofà, Chinese 沙發沙发 (shāfā), Polish sofa, Spanish sofá, German Sofa, Yiddish סאָפֿע (sofe).
